Zach Franzen – Loki and the Witch’s Heart

This piece was inspired by a Norse myth retold by Padraic Colum. In the myth Gulveig, the evil witch’s body is burned. The flames cannot consume her evil heart and Loki picks it from the ashes and eats it. He ingests her evil passions and becomes Loki the traitor instead of Loki the mischief-maker. I’ve taken a cue from Waterhouse and depicted the moment before the event becomes grotesque.
