Matt Ratcliffe : Masks – The Lucha Libre

Matt Ratcliffe - Masks - The Lucha Libre

Another illustration as part of my masks series. This time I wanted to explore the role of masks within Mexican Wrestling. Apparently the masks can trace their ancestry back to the aztecs of old. The masks themselves are said to imbue the wrestlers with the powers of animals, demons or even gods. Being demasked robs the wrestler of his “power” and is returned to human. Here we have a Technico about to lay down some serious smackdown on a nasty Rudo!
