Here is an illustration I produced based on the old English rhyme ‘Mary Mary quite contrary’ which was about Mary I, Henry VIII daughter, the ‘pretty maids’ were said to stand for the many guillotines that were used during her reign, the silver bells were the thumbscrews used to torture her subjects… although there are many other explanations for what the wording meant!
