Duncan Tonatiuh – Dear Primo

This is the cover of “Dear Primo, a letter to my cousin”, my first picture book. I wrote the story and illustrated it. It is published by Abrams and it will be in stores March 1st. If you want to pre-order it on Amazon click here.
The story is about Carlitos and Charlie, two cousins that write letters back and forth to each other. Carlitos lives in the countryside in Mexico. He rides his bicicleta to school and loves quesadillas. Charlie lives in a city in the US. He rides the subway to school and always gets a slice of pizza on his way home.
There are words in Spanish scattered throughout Dear Primo and a glossary at the end. To see more images and find out more about the book visit my blog: www.duncantonatiuh.wordpress.com
Duncan Tonatiuh – Mexican Wrestling meets Where the Wild Things

This is an image of a picture book I recently put together called Kid Salvaje -salvaje is Spanish for wild. It is my Lucha Libre take on Sendak’s classic Where the Wild Things Are.
There ar many great re-interpretations of classics. Romeo and Juliet have West Side Story. The Oddyssey has Joyce’s Ulysses. Therefore I gave a shot at re-interpreting a classic too, and perhaps the best picture book of all times.
To read a review of the book visit 100 Scope Notes and to see more images of it visit my blog: duncantonatiuh.wordpress.com
Duncan Tonatiuh – The flying men of Papantla

The Pre-Columbian dance performed by the flying men of Papantla was recently recognized as intangible heritage of humanity by the UNESCO. This is an image I made inspired by that fact. To read more click here
